Favoured for making umeshu, ume syrup, and umeboshi, Shirokaga Ume is regarded as one of Japan’s finest ume varieties alongside the renowned Nankou Ume.
Shirokaga plums infuse beautifully, creating umeshu with a rich, smooth body and fragrant finish. Their firm, juicy flesh also makes for a syrup that’s naturally sweet and refreshing, or pickled plums that are tender yet satisfyingly meaty. Umeboshi is full of natural anti-oxidants, good source of polyphenols, which are thought to reduce the risk of diabetes, help lower blood pressure, prevent hardening of the arteries, and boost calcium absorption. Background: Lychee is a fruit with a long history that has been cultivated in China since the 1st century BC. Lychee in Chinese medicinal food is classified as a blood nourishment and is said to have the effect of moisturizing the body. Lychee is said to have been loved by the Yang Gui Fei, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang’s favorite consort, where there is an episode of the Emperor ordered relay house to travel 600 kilometers from Guangdong to Chang’an in three days to transport this perishable fruit fresh for his beloved consort’s enjoyment.
How to peel raw lychee
1. Make a 3 cm cut with a knife or your nails along the faintly visible streaks on the surface of the red shell.
2. Pull either the left or right side of the cut shell to split it in half.
3. Enjoy plenty of juice without spilling!

Yubari melons are expensive Japanese melons grown in Yubari on Hokkaido which is characterized by its beautiful oval shape and fineness of the net. The melons are traditionally grown in volcanic ash soil in greenhouses, and the planting is done in February. They are highly prized for their renowned sweetness. A top grade pair of the premium cantaloupes has recently sold at auction for an astounding ¥3 million (£21,500).
The Yubari City Agricultural Cooperative Inspection Center strictly checks the specified items, and only melons that pass the inspection are shipped under the “Yubari Melon”. It is recommended to consume them within 2 to 3 days of harvesting, which is done by hand with scissors.
