Japanese Kumamoto Hi no Akari Mikan (Mandarin Orange)
Hi no Akari (肥のあかりみかん) is a rare specialty of Kumamoto that is shipped while the skin is still green. It was born by crossbreeding Nichinan No. 1 and Joppa Orange. It is the earliest of all the extremely early varieties that kicks off the mandarin orange season.
Compared to very early mandarins, which have a relatively strong sourness, this mandarin orange has a harmonious balance of sweetness and sourness. It is a high-quality mandarin orange that meets the strict standards of a sugar content of 10 degrees or more and citric acid of 1.0% or less. It is a special variety whose sugar content increases before the skin turns orange-yellow.
