Japanese Regal Red Comice Western Pear (Medium-Plus)
Regal Red Commis was discovered in 1960 as a red-colored branch of “Doyenne du Commis” in Charles Kinney’s fruit orchard in Oregon, USA. Among Western pears, the red-skinned variety is rare and inherits the rich aroma characteristic of “Doyenne du Commis”.
It is harvested in early September, about 20 days earlier than La France, and its most distinctive feature is its red skin and smooth, fine-grained flesh, making it easy to tell when it is ripening. When harvested, the fruit is reddish-brown in color, but as it ripens, the entire fruit becomes bright red in stripes. This is due to having 2 different genes, which is why Regal Red Comice is also known as a chimera.
The pulp is milky white, and when it ripens, it becomes dense and smooth to the touch, abundance of juice, and a high sugar content of about 15 degrees.
