In Okinawa and Ishigaki Island, papaya is generally eaten as a vegetable in green state, and normal variant of a papaya is usually not as sweet, hence there are not many who consume it. That’s until when the new variety of fruit papaya “Ishigaki Coral” came out.

Born and registered in Ishigaki Island in 2008, “Ishigakijima Fruit Papaya Ishigaki Coral” is a high-class fruit with an elegant sweetness that it is cultivated using a patented method using a mixture of red soil and coral fragments (sango). It is a fruit papaya with unprecedented deliciousness.

It has a milder papaya odor than conventional varieties, and when ripe, it has a sweet scent, soft mellow flesh and rich sugar content of about 13 degrees. It is best to consume when turns completely orange in color, and you may slice it in slices or cubes easily, as there are no seeds in the core.

It contains a lot of “β cryptoxanthin” which is said to be effective in preventing cancer, vitamins C and E which are effective in antioxidant action, and carotene which protects from lifestyle-related diseases.
