Japanese Harumi Mikan (Mandarin Orange)
“Harumi Mikan” is a kind of Dekopon (Dekotangor) that was born by mating Kiyomi and Ponkan F2432 in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka Prefecture. It was named “Harumi” in 1996 after the taste and scent reminiscent of spring. Harumi have almost no seeds and are easy to peel despite having a thick pericarp. In addition, the white film encasing its flesh is thinner than other oranges, so it is easy to eat and pulpy. You can enjoy two different textures, a fluffy texture and a “pop” surprise from the burst of sweet juices from each juicy pulp.
Harvesting starts in mid-January and peaks from February to early March. The quantity on the market is limited hence their rarity value is high, which makes them highly sought during its season.
