“Boshu loquat”, a taste of early summer, has been presented to the Imperial family every year since 1909. Boshu loquat is characterized by its juiciness with its large, thick fruit. Obusa (大房) variety was created around 1938 at the former Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Fruit Tree Experiment Station. It is a cultivar created by crossing ‘Kusunoki’ with ‘Tanaka’. Currently, it is the representative variety of Tomiura Town, occupying more than 60% of the total cultivation area. The fruit is large and the peel is dark orange and beautiful. It has a slightly low sugar content but low acidity, so it is a variety that is appreciated by many people.
Loquat has a mixture of pear & peach sweet taste and juicy texture, while it does not have any distinct fragrance itself, which makes it favorable to be added to dishes or desserts. You may also enjoy the fruit itself, with skin or without by peeling it off easily like peach.
