“Shinano Pearl” is an original variety of Nagano prefecture developed by Nagano Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station and registered in 2018. Its season starts from late September till early October.

Plums during this part of season are light red colour in appearance and heavy-weighted with water content due to late-maturing. “Shinano Pearl” are generally large in size with a weight of 200-300g approx and has a high sugar content of 19 to 20%. It is recommended to peel off the skin before eating which may be sour in taste.

There is a white powder (bloom) on the skin of the fruit, which is fructose produced by the plum and is a sign of freshness. When storing, wrap it in newspaper or paper and store it in the refrigerator to prevent moisture loss. Also, ripe plums do not last long, so be sure to eat them as soon as possible.

La France was discovered in France in 1864, but is currently rarely cultivated in Europe due to unsuitable climate. It was introduced to Yamagata Prefecture and currently accounts for about 70% of the production volume and is a representative of pear in Japan.

La France is characterized by its overflowing juice and elegant, melty creamy texture. It is also called the “Queen of Fruits” because of its rich taste. Each pear is at least 400-450g each with green skin color which turns yellow with brown motted spots which developed over time when ripening, which may attain sweetness as high as 15 brix level. They are usually available only for a short period between October to December, so try out while they are in season!
