Japanese Annou Satsumaimo (Sweet Potato)
<Season Exclusive>
Tanegashima (種子島) in Kagoshima Prefecture is the main production area for Anno potatoes. It is said that during World War II, soldiers dispatched to Sumatra Island in Indonesia brought back local sweet potatoes to Tanegashima and began cultivating them in the Anno area. Sweeter than the sweet potatoes that had been cultivated until now, its sticky texture quickly became popular and spread all over the island. Taking the name of the area where it was cultivated, the potato came to be called ‘Anno potato’.
Anno potato has a round shape with a rounded appearance. The characteristic of the taste is the high sugar content and sticky creamy texture. Anno potatoes contain more sucrose than other sweet potatoes which is the secret to their rich sweetness.
